Garden Assistant (Summer Student)

Located in Belleville, Gleaners Food Bank is a member of Feed Ontario and Food Banks Canada and works very closely with these organizations, local businesses, local farmers, and food distributors to bring donated food into the organization which has served the community since 1986. Gleaners Food Bank is seeking a Garden Assistant to begin immediately.

Job Duties: 

• Assist the Garden Coordinator with gardening.
• Plant and nurture new plants. Harvest and wash produce when ripe.
• Keep fresh food areas in the food bank stocked with harvested produce.
• Perform basic maintenance such as managing weed control.
• Work with, clean and organize all garden equipment/tools and keep the garden clean and tidy.
• Ensure a safe environment by adhering to safety and health regulations.
• Help with basic food bank duties when the weather is bad.

Skills/Qualifications:

• Must be entering or returning to post secondary school in fall 2024
• Must be under the age of 30 as required by the Canada Summer Jobs Program.
• The ability to kneel, crouch, bend, reach and lift for prolonged periods of the day.
• Positive attitude with a willingness to learn.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Time management and organizational skills.
• Ability to work well independently and as a team.
• Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 20lbs.
• Clean Vulnerable check

Additional Information:

• Wage: $16.55/hr
• Job type: Temporary – Employment ends August 30^th, 2024
• Schedule: 35 hours a week (32.5hrs, plus 30min unpaid lunch)
