SUMMARY
The Outreach and Communications Lead plays a key role in the planning, development, and implementation of community outreach and communications strategies that support Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik and the implementation of Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation’s child well-being law, Nigig Nibi Ki-win. This work is done in collaboration and coordination with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation through cross-training and regular communication. The Lead will oversee a small communications team and ensures that Pikwakanagan community members are informed, engaged, and reflected in all aspects of Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik’s outreach and engagement initiatives.

This position also works to ensure that the communications strategy for Nigig Gamik is understood and supported by all partners, within community and externally.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Engagement/Outreach
- Lead the planning and execution of community engagement sessions, events, and outreach activities.
- Coordinate communications with Algonquins of Pikwakanagan, including its departments and other owned entities.
- Build relationships with members and community groups to guide communication efforts in a culturally appropriate way.
- Utilize community feedback to inform strategy and improve communications and programming.
Strategic Communications
- Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies that support organizational goals and build public awareness of Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik’s programs and services.
- Oversee the creation of messages and materials that reflect the values, voice and priorities of Nigig Gamik and Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for media and external communication requests.
- Provide reciprocal communications support for other events and programs within Pikwakanagan where it is wanted and/or needed, working collaboratively.
Team and Project Oversight
- Supervise and mentor the Outreach and Communications Assistant.
- Delegate tasks and provide guidance to ensure day-to-day outreach and communications are executed effectively.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to support cross-functional communication and engagement initiatives.
Content Development
- Support the development of written content including press releases, newsletters, reports and other official communications.
- Ensure consistency in tone, messaging and branding across all channels.
- Contribute to the creation of promotional and educational materials.
Administrative and Reporting
- Monitor and evaluate communication efforts and engagement outcomes.
- Prepare reports and recommendations for leadership and funding partners.
- Manage communication timelines, documentation, and data tracking related to community feedback and engagement.
Other
- Performs other related duties as may be required by Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik’s Executive Director.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work involves contact with community members, Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik’s Service Managers and Director, the executive office, Pikwakanagan’s leadership and administration, legal counsel, and other individuals as it assists in the course of community engagement and communications to the community. Work involves a knowledge of how to effectively communicate with members of the Pikwakanagan community on the sensitive topic of child welfare and wellbeing, as well as many other partner organizations. For the purposes of this position, travel to, and attendance at, community events, engagement sessions, and other Nigig Gamik events is vital. These may take place both within and outside of the community.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Basic Requirements
- Diploma or post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in communications, community engagement, or a related role.
- Experience supervising staff or leading projects.
- Experience managing social media for organizations and projects.
- Experience working with First Nation people/groups
- Valid “G” class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Rated Requirements
Knowledge:
- Strong understanding of community-based engagement strategies.
- Communications strategies; knowledge of various communication mediums (social media, email, etc.).
- Knowledge of C-92 Capacity Building initiatives across Canada.
- Knowledge and understanding of Nigig Nibi Ki-win Gamik’s interest in supporting Pikwakanagan children, youth, and families.
Abilities:
- Exceptional written skills and verbal communication skills, including facilitation and presentation skills.
- Proficient with digital communication tools and platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and evaluate projects.
- Graphic design and content development experience is a significant asset.

Conditions of Employment:
- Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in communications, community engagement, or a related role, with experience managing social media for organizations and projects.
- Experience working with First Nation people/groups

- Valid “G” class driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
