A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Queen’s Student Accessibility Services, the Accessibility Services Advisor develops, implements and supports academic accommodation planning for students with disabilities. The Accessibility Services Advisor works with students, faculty, and staff to enable students with disabilities to attain their educational objectives. As a member of Queen’s Student Accessibility Services, the Accessibility Services Advisor helps educate the university community regarding strategies to enable the full participation of students with disabilities in all aspects of university life.
This position provides subject matter expertise for complex cases in which students are facing disability-related functional impacts to their ability to achieve academic objectives. This position participates in ongoing review of the accommodation protocol, makes recommendations for improvement and supports the implementation of changes. This position reviews medical and/or psychoeducational assessments, identifies and reviews available options for accommodation and/or consideration, ensures proper documentation, consults with faculty members on student’s behalf, and implements appropriate accommodation and/or consideration plan. This position also interprets and applies legislation and government policies in the accommodation process for students with disabilities.
What you will do

- Participates in ongoing review of the accommodation protocol, makes recommendations for improvement, and supports the implementation of changes.
- Reviews medical and/or psychoeducational assessments, identifies and reviews available options for accommodation and/or consideration, ensures proper documentation, consults with faculty members on student’s behalf, and implements appropriate accommodation and/or consideration plan.
- Builds relationships with students, parents, faculty and other university departments and services to facilitate accommodation and/or consideration requests.
- Interprets and applies legislation and government policies in the accommodation process for students with disabilities.
- Conducts interviews with students to obtain information about how they experience their disability in the academic context.
- Synthesizes and communicates accessibility and accommodations processes to students, staff and faculty.
- Provides advice to faculty and staff about the impact of a student’s disability or accommodation on academic performance.
- Supports academic transition from secondary to post-secondary where academic accommodation requirements may differ and recommends appropriate supports and resources.
Required Education
- Master’s Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires a professional designation, certification, or other qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.
Required Experience
- More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check required.
- Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
