The Picton Business Improvement Association is seeking a Summer Student to support its operations for July and August, with the possibility of an earlier start in June depending on availability.

About the Picton BIA
The Picton Business Improvement Association is a not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the local business community. Guided by a Board of volunteer members and an Executive Director, the BIA works collaboratively with businesses, stakeholders, and municipal partners to enhance the economic vitality, visual appeal, and overall experience of Picton’s commercial district. Through events, advocacy, and strategic initiatives, the BIA plays an important role in fostering a thriving and welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Position Overview
The Summer Student will provide administrative, research, and community engagement support to the BIA team. This role is designed to offer meaningful exposure to the operations of a Business Improvement Association and its contribution to local business development, community initiatives, and placemaking.
This position is particularly well-suited to students enrolled in programs such as Business Administration, Commerce, Public Administration, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Geography, Community Development, Marketing, Communications, or related fields. The role provides an opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a real-world setting while developing practical skills in municipal-adjacent and non-profit operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Administrative Support
- Assist with filing, document organization, scheduling, and general administrative tasks
- Support day-to-day operational needs to ensure efficient office functioning
Research and Data Collection
- Collect, organize, and summarize data related to BIA projects, events, and local business activity
- Assist in compiling information to support business retention, development, and community planning initiatives
Community Engagement
- Support outreach to local businesses and residents
- Assist with event coordination and communications initiatives
- Contribute to efforts that strengthen relationships between stakeholders and the broader community
Project/Event Support
- Assist with special projects focused on economic development, infrastructure enhacement, and public realm improvements
- Provide support in the planning and execution of community-based initiatives and events
Learning and Development
- Gain exposure to municipal and BIA operations, including public meetings, budgeting processes, and policy development
- Develop an understanding of the role of a BIA in supporting local economic growth, tourism, and community development
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with staff and Board Members
- Contribute to initiatives that support business growth and enhance the experience of residents and visitors in Picton

Position Details
- Duration: 8 weeks (July and August, with potential June start)
- Hours: 35 hours per week
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend availability required for events
- Compensation: $18.00 per hour
- Work Environment: This is an in-person role based in Picton; reliable transportation is recommended
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and possess a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Must be available for the full duration of the contract
- This position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Applicants must be 15-30 years of age.
