The Driver / Delivery Person is responsible for delivering products and supplies to customers, vendors, jobsites, and other corporate locations — safely, accurately, and on time. This role involves operating freight-handling equipment, maintaining company vehicles, verifying administrative paperwork, and representing Picton Home Hardware Building Centre in every
interaction with the public. All tasks must be performed with the speed and accuracy needed to protect our level of customer service.
Flexible availability is essential. This role requires availability to work weekends and statutory holidays to meet delivery schedules and customer needs.
Deliveries & Customer Service
• Deliver products and supplies to customers, vendors, jobsites, and corporate locations safely and on schedule.
• Move heavy and bulky merchandise for customers and sales personnel.
• Assist in loading and unloading merchandise and materials.
• Report customer complaints to management promptly.
• Stay alert for sales opportunities and suggest policy or procedure improvements that could benefit sales, profits, or morale.
Vehicle Operation & Safety
• Safely operate company vehicles and freight-handling equipment (forklifts, pushcarts, etc.), securing cargo properly.
• Perform light vehicle maintenance (e.g., checking oil) and maintain accurate vehicle maintenance records.
• Report vehicle maintenance needs to your supervisor promptly.
• Maintain a good driving record and lawfully operate all company vehicles used for deliveries.
• Move merchandise weighing up to 100 lbs to and from company vehicles during deliveries.
• Follow all safety precautions when operating vehicles and loading or unloading freight.
Documentation & Security
• Check delivery documents for accuracy and completeness.
• Follow company procedures for required signatures, forms, and receipts.
• Follow proper documentation procedures for merchandise that is returned or refused.
• Maintain proper security over merchandise and delivery documents.
• Advise your supervisor of shortages and damaged goods.
Team & Development
• Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
• Complete odd jobs and errands as needed.
• Take on additional duties and assignments as assigned by management.
• Work safely in compliance with provincial and federal legislation, using good judgment, and report hazards or unsafe behavior to management.
Required
• Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays — essential.
• Able to communicate effectively with customers, management, and other employees in person, by telephone, or by radio.
• Able to visually verify the contents of shipments.
• Able to safely operate loading, unloading, and transfer equipment (forklifts, pushcarts, computer, etc.) as well as company vehicles, and safely secure cargo.
• Able to move merchandise weighing up to 100 lbs to or from company vehicles during deliveries.
• Good driving record, with the ability to lawfully operate all company vehicles used for deliveries.
• High school graduation or equivalent.
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team atmosphere.
• Reports directly to the yard supervisor, assistant manager, or store manager.
• Meets with the assistant manager for quarterly and annual performance reviews.
