The Fairfield Homestead Heritage Association is looking for Historic Site Interpreters

  • For the 2026 visitor season, June 15 to August 28.
  • The work week is 30 hours, (5 days, 6 hours per day), with starting salary rate of   $17.60.
  • The work week pattern is Wednesday through Sunday

 

Job Overview

The place of work is FAIRFIELD HOUSE, a 1793 farmhouse retaining a high proportion of the work of the original Loyalist builders, in Fairfield Park, at eastern end of the Loyalist Parkway, Amherstview, ON. Staff must be comfortable in a non-institutional environment.

A Historic Site Interpreter works as part of a 2-person team, supplemented by volunteers. The program at Fairfield House emphasizes museum principles and learning from primary evidence, including the material visible to visitors in the House and on the site.

A Fairfield House interpreter

  • Provides effective interpretation of Fairfield House and its related themes through a guided tour and through development of alternative means of presenting the heritage themes of the site. This requires learning the specific historical and technical information that are essential for the interpretation of Fairfield House and its surroundings.
  • Provides visitors to Fairfield House with a thematic tour of Fairfield House by accurately sharing heritage in a friendly, informative way. The summer schedule provides tours Wednesday through Sunday starting Canada Day.
  • Carries out daily routines of record-keeping and care for Fairfield House and its surroundings, ensuring an attractive and safe environment. Assists with care of flower gardens and yard.
  • Prepares interpretive materials to share the heritage themes of the site through written and visual presentations made available digitally.
  • Assists with curatorial projects of site condition monitoring, documentation, historical research, and collection care and record-keeping consistent with Loyalist Township’s program for care of Fairfield collections.
  • Carries out other projects as required in support of FHHA activities.
  • Contributes as a reliable, effective part of a team.

Skills and Interests

  • Curiosity about the starting points of history; local history; museum methods; learning from material evidence.
  • Enjoys meeting and speaking with people of all ages and backgrounds and has some related experience.
  • Must have good spoken and written communication skills.
  • Ready to learn specialized information and is able to communicate that accurately to visitors to Fairfield House in a flexible, conversational way. Site interpretation uses specialized knowledge related to 1790s building methods, the documented experiences of the Fairfield family as Loyalists, and local, everyday history through the 1800s.
  • Must satisfactorily complete an orientation program.
  • Computer skills needed are the use of standard word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and database software. An asset would be experience creating videos and digital material for social media and managing website content
  • Assets would be experience working with the public; presenting history through exhibits, museum education, or interpretation programs; teaching outside a classroom;
  • Conversational French an asset.

REQUIREMENTS: One position is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs program with eligibility requirements candidate must meet.

  • Must have reliable means of transportation getting to Fairfield House in Amherstview (Note: we are located on a bus route.)
