The Cashier / Sales Associate is the front-line ambassador of the Picton Home Hardware Building Centre experience. In this role you will process customer transactions accurately and efficiently, deliver exceptional service at every touchpoint, and contribute to a welcoming store environment that keeps our community coming back. You will handle all point-of-sale
functions — cash, debit, credit, and gift card — while acting as a knowledgeable resource for product questions and in-store promotions.
This is a full-time position. Availability to work weekends and statutory holidays is an essential requirement of this role— candidates unable to meet this schedule will not be considered.
Customer Service & Sales
• Greet every customer warmly and communicate professionally in person and by telephone.
• Ensure customers leave with a positive experience; proactively resolve any concerns.
• Assist customers with product advice, pricing information, directions, and special-order follow-ups.
• Maintain current knowledge of in-store promotions, flyers, and product inventory, including yard stock.
Point-of-Sale Operations
• Operate all POS equipment (cash register and smart SELECT terminal) with speed and accuracy.
• Process cash, credit, debit, and gift card transactions; verify signatures and expiry dates as required.
• Follow store procedures for returns, refunds, and price overrides.
• Reconcile all transaction records and tabulate daily sales totals in accordance with store policy.
Store Standards & Safety
• Maintain a clean, organized checkout area and merchandise displays throughout each shift.
• Monitor for shoplifting and respond according to store policy.
• Work safely in compliance with provincial and federal legislation; report hazards to management promptly.
Team & Development
• Attend store meetings and training sessions as required.
• Assist in onboarding and training new cashier team members.
• Contribute to special projects and additional duties as assigned by management.
Required
• Full-time availability, including weekends and holidays — essential.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong mathematical and cash-handling skills.
• Excellent verbal communication skills — friendly, clear, and professional.
• Collaborative team player with a positive, customer-first attitude.
• Genuine eagerness to learn and continuously grow retail knowledge.
Preferred
• Previous retail or customer-service experience.
• Familiarity with hardware, building materials, or home improvement products.
