Summer Student – Environmental & Sustainability Student

Do you have a passion for the environment? Our Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications from students to fill the summer position of Environmental & Sustainability Student to support our Operational Services Department in beautiful Prince Edward County, a vibrant community with beautiful beaches, wide open landscapes and ample opportunities for outdoor fun, including artistic and cultural events, food, music and wineries/breweries. 

The Environmental and Sustainability Student will bring their education in Environmental Studies or a related discipline to perform a balance of indoor and outdoor work, and must be returning to school in the Fall. This student will work under the supervision and mentorship of the Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor and the Environmental Services and Sustainability Technologist (arborist) to assist with tree planting and maintenance, tree assessments, and the management of urban trees, as well as providing administrative assistance with tree monitoring programs and data collection for ongoing projects. 

The student will have the chance to observe and participate in the day-to-day operations of our Environmental Services and Sustainability operations under the purview of the Environmental Services and Sustainability Supervisor who will help develop the student’s skills through one-on-one training and job shadowing in tree identification and maintenance, the management of an urban tree plan, and the integral role of a comprehensive data collection system. The student will help develop and deliver an invasive species management plan across the County. They will also learn about the Brownfields development and municipal processes via one-on-one project review with the supervisor, as well as shadowing the supervisor as they project manage a number of ongoing sites.

General qualifications include:

  • Enrolment in a recognized post-secondary program and returning to school in the Fall.
  • Experience working with GIS, as well as knowledge of tree classifications; able to identify different kinds of trees.
  • Safety conscious and provides own certified safety footwear.
  • Able to work as part of a team and independently, as required.
  • Proof of a valid ‘G2’ or ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s Licence.
