Artwork Writer + Editor

Oeno Gallery is a fine art gallery located in Prince Edward County, Ontario. We represent contemporary painters and sculptors, and also have a strong secondary market sales program. As we expand our online program of advertising and promotion on multiple platforms, we wish to hire an employee or contractor to join our team as a professional art writer and editor. In this capacity, the writer will create descriptions of individual artworks suitable for a broad audience, write longer pieces describing individual artist’s practices, and support the production of other text and visual material. 

Responsibilities + Duties

As Writer and Editor you will be responsible for the following:

  • Write compelling descriptions for individual artworks
  • Edit artist biographies
  • Update artist CVs
  • Upload artwork descriptions and artist biographies and CV’s on multiple online platforms
  • Help to manage artist inventory internally as well as on various online platforms
  • Compose blogs, news items and web content for Oeno Gallery website
  • Write stories and posts for social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram
  • Write long format and essays for gallery publications as well as editorial for print and online articles
  • Conduct and compile provenance research on contemporary and historical fine art
  • Draft emails for mass distribution, i.e. Newsletters to clients, designers and artists

Skill Requirements

  • Ability to describe the subject matter of painting, sculpture, outdoor sculpture, photography and works on paper
  • Compare styles and express the background, personalities, techniques of the artists.
  • Communicate using a well-articulated, persuasive and sales-oriented voice
  • Ability to Interpret and communicate the meaning of a piece of artwork that provides potential collectors with confidence and understanding
  • Ability to work independently and within defined timelines
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Well-organized and attentive to detail
  • Excellent computer skills in areas such as inventory management software, online art auctions, online market place websites and social media platforms
  • Work experience and education in contemporary art related fields
  • Strong personal and professional references

Degree Level: Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree

Degree Field: Communications, English, Journalism, Art History, Contemporary Art or equivalent

Experience: Prior professional writing experience and work with online cloud based platforms

Key Skills: Ability to review art work objectively and communicate that through convincing and compelling writing; strong self-motivation and ability to meet deadlines; creativity; familiarity with descriptive writing techniques, artistic styles, and art history; ability to obtain factual information, organize written documents, and format articles for publication

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Start Date: As soon as possible

Location: This is a “work from home” position for the time being
