Position Summary:

The Youth Recreation Support Worker will be responsible for the planning and delivering of programs and services offered through the Child Welfare Prevention Program with specific emphasis on the Youth Centre which provides activities and events for children and youth ages 5-18. Typical hours are Monday to Thursday 3 p.m.-5 p.m. for Youth Group. The incumbent must follow the strategic plans of the organization, adhering to the HFN vision and values.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Planning activities for Youth Group that are responsive to youth and taking into consideration ages of youth involved
  • Delivering of programs and services to youth (ages 5-18)
  • Planning all aspects of events for youth from time to time
  • Communicating activities and other relevant information to clients of the youth program
  • Facilitating events for youth
  • Ensuring that safety is paramount when planning and delivering all events and programs
  • Completing administrative duties (i.e. reporting, communication, paying invoices, filing, etc.)
  • Promoting the vision, mission and values of Hiawatha First Nation
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Graduated Post-Secondary school in the area of Child Youth Worker or other related field; or
  • Currently enrolled in a Post-Secondary program in a relevant area; with
  • Experience in working with youth and supervising groups of youth; or
  • A combination of education, training or work experience which Hiawatha deems to be equivalent
  • Must provide a clear CPIC and VSS
  • Must have valid CPR/First Aid or be willing to obtain certification
  • Must have or be willing to obtain Food Handler’s Safety Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Own vehicle an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Evenings and some weekends
  • Working with youth and parents, coworkers, agencies and community

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Expectation of reporting and other office duties


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office, email and internet, etc.)
  • Experience with budget and financial management
  • Experience in working with and engaging one on one and small to large groups of youth
  • Excellent liaison and networking skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation, codes, requirements and government agencies
  • Knowledge of the community and available resources
  • Well developed interpersonal, public relations and relationship building skills
  • Excellent communication (oral, electronic and written)
  • Excellent organizational, time and file management skills
  • Exhibits a high degree of initiative and self-direction
  • Proactive problem solver with excellent conflict resolution skills
