The Local Store in Prince Edward County is seeking to hire a full-time (30 hours per week) summer student, with an immediate start date.
We are looking for a pleasant, honest, friendly and enthusiastic person to join our team this summer. Someone who is interested in interacting with the public and who works well with a team. Someone who is interested in people and has excellent interpersonal and communication skills is mandatory. An interest in learning about what the local community produces as well as an interest in arts and culture and tourism is important.
The successful candidate must be willing to also work outside and must be aware that there are farm animals on the premises, so it they have allergies to hay and animals this job might not be a good fit. As we are destination for the county, someone who has experience and knowledge of the county would be an asset.
What is The Local Store?
The Local Store offers one location for people to shop for a complete range of everything made in Prince Edward County. There is so much to see and do in the County, often people don’t have the time to see and do it all. Locals also enjoy the convenience of being able to purchase items from local craftspeople and producers in one spot. Currently we have the work of over 170 local people which includes over fabric artists, wood workers, jewelers, potters, authors, musicians, painters, sculptors, glass artisans, photographers, arts & crafts artisans and over 35 food producers.
What are the main opportunities of learning and also responsibilities of the job?
There are 4 main pillars in the job description for this position: 1) Tourism 2) Special Events (non-profit) 3) Agriculture / Speciality products 4) Arts & Culture
-Be an ambassador for Prince Edward County to the many customers and visitors to the store
-Be personable and friendly and add to a warm and welcoming work atmosphere
-Be friendly, smile and say “hello” to customers as you pass them in the store as well as when they arrive
-Assist customers with questions about the area: history, where to visit etc
-Assist customers with their questions about the store, what it promotes and what it sells
-Operate point of sale, bar coding system
-Be willing to and offer to help out as much as possible
-Strive to aware of situations and occasions when your help is needed without being asked
-Work in a friendly and earnest manner in team environment with others
2) Special Events Non Profit - Car Boot Sale on the even Sundays of the months. The proceeds go towards the non-profit Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Building Fund.
-Work in coordination with the non-profit groups for developing ideas and implementing plans to enhance and maximize the fund raising opportunity at the event
-Liaison with the sellers
-Ensure sellers have permits and signed agreements in place
-Marshall and organize the event grounds on the day of the event
-Follow up on with sellers to ensure customer satisfaction and make recommendations for improvements in the process of the event
3) Agriculture: Specialized
–work with the specialized local products of over 30 food producers
-be familiar with the product, what it is made of, what makes is special, how it is made and how it can be used
-communicate with the customer fluently on the products
-be aware of product placement and marketing opportunities for product
-weekly product feature displays to be organized, rotated and managed
4) Arts & Culture
-Be familiar with the work of over 100 fine artists, photographers, jewellers, potters and other artisans
-Go the extra mile in helping the customer with inquiries about the artist and the work ( e.g. rather than say “I don’t know”, say “Let me go and find that out for you”)
-Assist the store management in the display of the goods and curation of the works
