Art Farm Produce, Warkworth ON, are looking to hire a Full Time – Market Garden Assistant (Student Job).

Position: Market Garden Assistant (Student Job – Age Range – 15-30)

Farm: Art Farm Produce

Location: Warkworth, Trent Hills, Ontario (between Peterborough, Cobourg, Trenton, Campbellford, Belleville). No on-farm housing.

Art Farm, founded in 1994, is located in the Northumberland hillside, east of Peterborough and north of Colborne Ontario. Owned by artists Lenni Workman and Brad Francis, who work on their art in the winter and the garden in the summer. We are not certified organic, however, the organic standards are followed in all aspects of the farm, from the greenhouse to the chicken house. Crop rotation, cover crops, composting and shallow tilling are used to produce a variety of vegetables, flowers and berries.

The farm is 28 acres, with a 14 acre hardwood forest, approximately 3/4 acre under cultivation, and the rest in hay or fallow fields. We have a drip irrigation system from our spring fed pond. We do not offer accommodation, however workers are welcome after their work day to forage in the woods or jump in the pond.

Job Duties:

The candidate will:

 

  • Assist in the planting, cultivation and harvesting of a diverse range of vegetables using organic farming practices

 

  • Learn to operate and maintain farm equipment

 

  • Available April to November.

 

  • Contribute to the overall success of the farm through hard work, determination and teamwork.

 

  • Feeding and watering chickens as well as cleaning the coop.

 

  • Experience working on a farm or at landscaping is a plus.

Qualifications:

Market Garden Assistant

Dates: Tuesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4p.m., April 9-August 30

  • Have a strong work ethic requiring grit and determination

 

  • Have good communication skills

 

  • Have an openness to learning and continuously improving farming practices and methods.

 

  • Are able to work outside in any weather condition

 

  • Able to lift 40 lb bins, squat, and do repetitive tasks diligently

 

  • Are able to retain information and know the priorities of the day after a few weeks of training.
