The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) Healing and Wellness Branch is seeking a strong team player to serve as a Métis Family Well-Being Coordinator (MFWB).  These are permanent full-time positions based in The Métis Nation of Ontario offices in Northbrook, Owen Sound, and Thorold ON, with some travel throughout the respective region.

The Métis Family Well-Being program (MFWB) aims to disrupt and prevent the cycle of violence against Indigenous women by developing policies and resources to support children and youth affected by violence. The strengths-based and prevention-oriented programs developed at the local level by Indigenous partners will reduce the need to bring children into care by supporting families through the least disruptive means possible.

With the program’s focus on the connection between violence in Indigenous families and communities and improved child and youth outcomes over a lifetime, the longer term objectives of the program reflect these, including: The reduction of the number of Indigenous children and youth in the child welfare and youth justice systems by reducing the need to bring children in to care; The reduction of the occurrence of violence in families;  and,  the improvement of the overall health and well-being of communities.

Reporting to the MFWB Program Supervisor, the duties include but are not limited to:

  • Deliver the Métis Family Well-Being program in the spirit and philosophy of the Métis Nation of Ontario’s Statement of Prime Purpose
  • Comply with MNO Policies and Procedures and MNO Financial Policies and Procedures at all times
  • Deliver the Métis Family Well-Being program outside of typical MNO work hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm to ensure the program is reaching the targeted population – children / youth
  • Deliver the Métis Family Well-Being program through holistic approaches to: deliver prevention-focused, culturally-responsive supports to promote healthy communities by supporting families to heal from the effects of intergenerational trauma, reduce violence, and address the over-representation of Indigenous children and youth in child welfare and youth justice systems. This will be accomplished through client-driven services and culture-based programming, assist in developing family wellness plans, deliver workshops or sharing circles, and outreach that educates in preventive choices leading to healthy lifestyles, provide referrals and advocacy, community networking and other relevant services with the highest level of quality and care
  • Maintain client files including preparation of intake forms, documentation, wellness plans and case noting
  • Track site budget and report surplus and/or deficiencies to Supervisor on a monthly basis
  • Perform administrative duties such as purchase orders, expense submissions and program reports
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times, and adhere to privacy legislation
  • Coordinate and collaborate for additional health and wellness services with external organizations on behalf of the client as needed
  • Participate in on-going professional development activities as time and financial resources permit
  • Network with other health related agencies as well as Indigenous organizations to improve access to the MFWB program
  • Attend regular Métis Nation of Ontario Council meetings within the coordinators region, outside of Métis Nation of Ontario regular working hours
  • Competently support and assist part-time culture staff with cultural programming and reporting, outside regular Métis Nation of Ontario working hours
  • Be available and flexible for meetings or travel outside of Métis Nation of Ontario regular working hours as required, including mandatory attendance at the Annual General Assembly
  • Fulfill all other responsibilities as determined by Management of the Healing and Wellness Branch

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary education in a Social Sciences related field and/or minimum 2 years’ experience in providing social support services to clients in an Indigenous setting
  • Proficiency with computer programs (Outlook, Excel, Work and PowerPoint)
  • Available to travel, reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Successful candidate will provide - Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision

 Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of the Métis Nation of Ontario organization and programs
  • Knowledge and ability to liaise with other Indigenous programs and services
  • Ability to lift 11.5 kg when required
  • Available to work flexible hours with ability to work extended hours or weekends as necessary
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Ontario
  • Bilingualism will be an asset
