Prince Edward Public Library is looking for a Children and Youth Programming Assistant to start February 11th, 2020.

 

Job Purpose:

The Children's and Youth Program Assistant will provide support to the Children's and Youth Program Coordinator through planning, implementing, and reflecting on existing and future programming.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with outreach and promotion specific to Children and Youth:

  • Promotes and markets Library services to relevant communities throughout the system.
  • Maintains regular contact with Children's and Youth Program Coordinator regarding available youth programming or literacy.
  • Assists Children's and Youth Program Coordinator with developing and maintaining partnerships with other community organizations, including schools.

Program Planning and Implementation:

  • Works closely with Children's and Youth Program Coordinator to develop and implement programs that have a literacy and education focus.
  • Responsible for planning and preparing programs as directed by Children's and Youth Program Coordinator.
  • Plan programming in accordance with the Prince Edward County Public Library and Archives Strategic Plan and mandates.
  • Careful tracking of statistics for program attendance.
  • Familiar with or willing to learn popular Makerspace resources, such as 3D Printing, basic robotics, circuitry, and coding.
  • Assist with and independently plan class visits for local schools.
  • Research library programming and trends.

Library Duties

Provides reference services for library users:

  • Instructs library users in use of services.
  • Locates specific material in the online catalogue and on the shelves.
  • Process requests for interlibrary loans.

Performs circulation functions:

  • Processes check-ins, check-outs, reserves, renewals, and registrations.
  • Performs telephone reception duties and opening and closing procedures.
  • Enforces library rules and regulations.
  • Assists users with using public access computers and electronic resources available through the library.

Provides collection maintenance services:

  • Shelves materials
  • Shelf-reading
  • Missing and Overdue Lists

Performs other library-related duties as assigned:

  • Communicates problems and/or concerns to the CEO or designate.
  • Participates in the grant writing process to help supplement library funds.
  • Performs other library-related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary Library Technician diploma, or degree in related discipline
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of libraries, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive experience working with children in small and large groups (i.e. class sizes)
  • Knowledge of personal computers and hands-on experience with word processing, the Internet, library database applications, and library automation systems is required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Works well independently and with a team.
  • Good interpersonal skills required to communicate with the public.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and transportation for work-related travel.
  • CPR/First Aid certification is an asset.

 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works in a library environment and onsite at any of the six (6) branches as required.
Availability for work weekdays, weekends, and evenings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift and carry boxes weighing up to forty pounds (40 lbs or 18.14 kilograms).
Required to stand for long periods of time.
